in and opened fire, killing one classmate and wounding four others. the 17-year-old is in custody. this morning, they are searching for answers. jay gray reports from ohio. >> reporter: chardon high is still on lockdown a full day after a deadly soting rampage in the school's cafeteria. >> we have an active shooting at the high school. >> reporter: that shooter was 17-year-old t.j. lane. >> he had no emotion on his face. he was just shooting. >> reporter: quietly, deliberately gunning down students before chased from the building by teachers and surrendering without incident a few blocks away. overnight, hundreds gathered at several vigils across this tight-knit town, searching for some kind of relief or strength by being together. >> it's shocking to the community. one thing i can say they are so amazed how they are surrounding the kids and loving on them. >> reporter: classes have been canceled today as investigators continue in a search for clues about how and why it all happened.

though, they admit there are still more questions than answers here. but in this small town, one thing does seem very clear. >> i hope every parent, if you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days, you take that time. >> reporter: because they are now painfully aware without warning that time can be ripped away. jay gray, nbc news, chardon, ohio. we turn now to politics and today's all-important primaries in michigan and arizona. polls showing mitt romney way ahead in arizona but the very close race in michigan is critical. a loss in his home state would be a devastating blow for the romney campaign. tracie potts joining us now from washington with more. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. republican insiders are saying mitt romney really just got to pull this out, he has to win his home state to avoid a long fight with rick santorum. and fight is exactly how some

voters there are describing the campaign. with 30 delegates at stake in michigan today divided proportionate proportionately, it's like 14 different primaries in one state. >> it's one story in western michigan where you have a lot of the conservative christian voters, it's another story here in metropolitan detroit where you've got a lot of suburbani s suburbanites. >> reporter: the polls have been back and forth. >> santorum is a nice guy, but he's never had a job in the private sector. >> doing remarkably well. >> reporter: some michigan voters say they're tired of the attack. >> they're talking about each other instead of talking about what needs to be done for this condition. >> you got your cameras, you got to put me up on facebook tonight. >> reporter: santorum called romney's tax plan obama styled class warfare. he's sponsoring computer robocalls all over michigan

illinois congressman told al sharpton that santorum is wrong in several ways. >> i don't know what rick santorum is thinking about because clearly he is out of the mainstream, he's hypocritical and also just plain wrong when it comes to his facts when he talks about college, for example. but you know, if you want to talk about religion, let's talk about the values in every major religion in the world. things like love thigh neighbor and feed the hungry. because he's also taken off after food stamps. aren't these the kinds of things that ought to embody a religious person's view of the role of our society some so i'm just completely confused. and besides that, we just heard from president obama, but let me quote senator rick santorum in 2006 saying, quote, i was xh committed to ensuring every

pennsylvanian has access to higher education. that was just a few years ago. >> don't mess politics nation week nights at 6:00 eastern right here on msnbc, the place for politics. a home security camera showing dramatic video of a cab smashing through a fence and into the front of a house in brooklyn, new york. the car had such force as you see there, it knocked a second vehicle down the street. the driver was seriously injured but is expected to recover there. for the second time in a week, an suv has slammed into a convenience market in massachusetts. this time, the front of a ford explorer landing on the counter of the store. one person was treated for minor injuries. there's no word on what caused the driver to lose control. and flames rip through an oklahoma city flea market monday afternoon. three firefighters were hurt when the floor collapsed after the rear portion of the building gave way. authorities have not said what they think might have caused that fire. the market was closed at the time. then, finally, too many cars parked too close together made a

frozen lake in wisconsin not so frozen. the ice gave way and 36 cars straight through the cracks on lake winnebago. fortunately, no one inside the cars. the cars were parked there for an ice fishing competition. now a look at the national weather. we turn to bill karins with the weather channel forecast. do not park on ice this year. especially this year. >> have you ever driven on a lake before in a car? >> i've not. >> it's scary. i wouldn't want to park -- up in maine. >> crazy bill karins. >> ice gets pretty thick up there. but this winter is different. we have the primaries today. a big winter storm headed for michigan. what's interesting is that during the day today, the storm will be right in the middle, so it shouldn't be affecting either area. so let's show where you it hit yesterday first. that was in california.

that's where the snow began to paul. pine valley, california. picked up about 3 to 4 inches. some kids got to play with some snow. california has been just like many other areas with a lack of winter weather all season. so today as we go throughout the forecast period, wednesday is a day of concern for new england. that's going to be the problem up this. so today is fine. it's more or less wednesday, thursday that you'll have the issues. today's forecast looks great. temperatures in the 40s. 50 in philadelphia. 53 washington, d.c. the problem is that that storm system is now back here in the pour corner region. so atlanta today a chance of some showers. east coast looks okay. forecast in areas like denver, not a winter storm for you, in denver we'll see a wintry mix. phoenix, you should be just fine at 62 today. and even detroit should be fine, also. temperatures, it's really not all that cold. that's kind of bean the theme this entire winter. we are watching the cold air in the dakotas, minnesota,

wisconsin and michigan. those are exactly the area has will get hit by the next storm. so currently again it's located out here in the four corner region and the snowfall forecast, about 6 to 12 inches. this will be a significant storm. blizzard conditions likely between bismarck and fargo, outside of minneapolis. minneapolis by the way, you'll start as snow, probably get 2 to 4 inches, and then sleet, maybe freezing rain, kind of messy for you. but the worse worst of it, this spring stripe. and that will include many inches for vermont, massachusetts. so here's the forecast today into tonight. bismarck to fargo the heaviest snow. chicago, no snow for help. just rain. so a major winter storm, but it wouldn't be affecting the primary states today. home sales surge, and a new study that's giving rich folks a bad wrap. your business headlines is straight ahead. coming up, the kings get a new home and without a doubt the

welcome back to "first look." here are some of the top stories making news for you this morning. in syria, more than 130 people killed on monday and many in homs. the syrian government says a draft constitution was approved sunday with nearly 90% approval from citizens, despite opposition groups boycotting the vote. in israel, they say they will not warn the united states if it attacks iran's nuclear facilities according to the associated press. israel telling american officials that could decrease the chance that u.s. would be held responsibility for failing to stop at attack. a emergency landing last night. the front landing gear failed to come down. none of the 71 people aboard were hurt in that. a problem with another

danica headed to the pits and returned and she finished 38th. a bizarre accident while under caution. montoya lost his car and hit a jet drier. a jet drier is a truck that cleans the track. the truck immediately burst into flames. thankfully montoya and the driver of the truck was okay. who would have thought the biggest wreck of the night would be a service truck. tony stewart got loose four laps remaining. seven cars involved in that pileup. brought out the tenth caution. that set up a green white to checkered for all of the marbles. matt kenseth held off dale earnhardt jr. and it took about six hours but in the end matt kenseth wins the daytona 500. no nba games last night. the kings will be kept in sacramento for the long term.

morning and clear it out for a breezy cooler afternoon. with the next snow that will come in during the day wednesday, even areas like new york city will start as snow, but that will quickly change over to rain for new york city. but areas of central and northern new england, this should be an all snow event. and late snow during the day thursday. probably won't especially he said up thursday evening, so 6 to 12 inches for a good swathe of northern new england. be one of the more widespread snows for central and northern new england this winter. so today is just fine. cooler than yesterday in just about all areas, but not bad. typical late winter day around here. and then as we go through the middle of the country, we'll watch that blizzard developing later this season up in the dakotas. >> i've been out west and there's no snow out there. >> they're it actually getting a bit, too. >> thank you so much. justin bieber is not happy with joustin bieber. plus angelina jolie is used to turning head, but this time it's one of her high profile limbs

"way too early" starts right now. it's been three weeks since the last voting. mitt romney, rick santorum and the rest of the field will go today before the voters in michigan and arizona. the question is how will weeks of talking about contraception, president snobbery and the height of the trees in michigan play out when the poles close tonight. a report this morning that israel has notified the white house temperature go alone if necessary in taking out iran's nuclear facility. the question is, how will iran and the united states by the way respond if israel in fact does that. and a wild night of fire, rain and laundry detergent at nascar's biggest race. the question is, who won at daytona where they finally finished just before 1:00 in the morning. it's way too early for will.
